Oh Canada...my home and native land
Every year, when July 1st rolls around, I always get pretty home sick for my home and native land. While Americans are celebrating July 4th with a bang, I always feel a little home sick and wish I could move back to Canada. But then reality sets in and I start to realize what obstacles we might have to overcome to move back and the hard work I have had to endure to try to establish things like bank accounts, credit etc and the headache start and then I really start to love Colorado again. Don't get me wrong, I love Colorado, but someday I always wonder if we might be able to move back to the great white north...one can home.

So in honor of July 1st and Canada Day, a fun news article one of my good dear friends from Calgary sent me. Enjoy!

VANCOUVER -- Where would the world be without green garbage bags, zippers and ginger ale?

Canadians have made some wonderful, weird and sometimes dubious contributions to humankind.

Were it not for Canadians, the world would be devoid of paint rollers, snowmobiles and five-pin bowling.

There would be no electric organ, green ink or multiplex movie theatres.

And yes, the recipe for Nanaimo bars comes from the British Columbian town of the same name.

Without Canada, time as we know it would end. Sir Sanford Fleming, a Scottish immigrant to the New World, devised the world's 24-zone standard time system.

"Canadians aren't boring in the least," says Will Ferguson, award-winning author of Canadian History for Dummies and Why I Hate Canadians.

Politically, the country has staked its claim in the "radical middle," he says, but don't let that fool you.

Canadians are diverse, eclectic and eccentric, he says. And pragmatic. Rather than wither in the winter cold, Canadians pulled the toques down over their ears and invented snowmobiles, the electric car heater and the snowblower.

Thank Canada for toboggans.

Canada comes from the native words meaning big village -- much better than Efisga, Tuponia or Colonia. Those names were proposed for the motherland during debates on Confederation.

It is arguably the most ethnically diverse country in the world.

Canada has the highest population of Icelanders outside Iceland and the most Italians outside Italy.

"It's such a culturally diverse and interesting country that has geography and history and people that come from every corner of the globe," says Heritage Minister Sheila Copps. "That's what makes it really unique."

Unique is one way to put it.

Each month in each province there is at least one report of a UFO.

Of all the road accidents that occur in Canada, 0.3 per cent involve a moose. And a Calgary tour company offers a course in igloo building.

Maybe such madness is what makes comedian Rick Mercer feel so lucky to be Canadian.

"I just always feel . . . that we won the Lotto and anyone who was born in Canada or has come to Canada, you won the Lotto," says Rick Mercer, star of CBC's hit comedies Made in Canada and This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

"You know, Canadians don't take themselves that seriously, and quite often we're self-deprecating and that's a character trait I admire greatly in an individual and so I admire it in a nation," says Mercer.

Canadians may not take themselves seriously, but they do some seriously strange stuff.

Canada holds the world record for the highest stunt freefall for a 1,100 foot plunge from the CN Tower.

The world's oldest snowboarder hits the slopes in Canada. Wong Yui Hoi, of British Columbia, took up the sport at 75 according to the folks at Guiness.

Canadian Jack McKenzie, 77, is the oldest person to ski to the north pole.

Those months spent with scant daylight hiding from frostbite may go a long way to explain some other Canadian, uh, accomplishments.

Canada boasts the longest gum wrapper chain in the world - 10,387 metres- according to the Guiness book of world records, and the most push-ups in an hour - 3,416.

Canadians hold the record for pogo-stick jumping and the largest hug. They baked the world's largest cherry pie, made the world's largest block of cheese and hold the world kissing title for the most couples smooching simultaneously.

Maybe it's not cabin fever, but brain freeze. A 7-Eleven store in Winnipeg sells more Slurpees per capita than anywhere else in the world.

Canadians eat more Kraft dinner and Albertans more Jello. Details were not available on the favoured flavour.

Canadians have such an imagination they try to take credit for basketball and the telephone, says Ferguson.

"They'll claim the telephone as a Canadian invention. Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland, educated in Scotland and most of his research took place in Boston . . . but that doesn't matter because he lived in Canada," Ferguson says.

Yet Canada claims basketball because James Naismith was born in Canada, although he came up with the sport while living in the U.S.

But there's no denying that Toronto's Joe Shuster was co-creator of that greatest of American heroes, Superman.

And who else but the first nation of hockey could have invented Plexiglas, the goalie mask or the referee whistle?

Since beer is practically a sport unto itself in Canada, Vancouver's Steve Pasjack came up with those built-in, tuck-away handles for beer cases in 1957.

And women can blame Canada. Montreal's Canadelle company invented the push-up bra in 1964 and Dennis Colonello invented the abdominizer in 1984.

Our greatest achievement?

"I think Canada's greatest achievement is Canada, just the existence of this country, this wildly diverse, huge, rich, quirky, wonderful country," Ferguson says.

facials
On another note, I went for a facial today which is always very relaxing. I have been breaking out recently, probably due to stress, so I like to go and get the pores cleaned out and have my blackheads removed.

I’m also going on Thursday to get my hair highlighted again and a hair cut. I waited too long this time to get my highlights so I look like complete crap. But not after Thursday!

Sleep sleep sleep
I had a check up with my allergist today since I am undergoing twice monthly allergy injections to try to reduce the need for me to take allergy medications since I am allergic to everything. I’ve managed to stick with twice monthly injections now for two and a half years and have yet to wait a good year or two to really determine if they will be effective or not. Approximately 50 percent of the population who undergo these shots of the things you are allergic to are completely cured. The majority of the people who do undergo the shots experience a reduction in their symptoms. I’m hoping for the complete cure of course! The basic premise is that the doctor injects serums that contain the things that you are allergic to (for me, weeds, pollens, cats, dogs, grass, and cockroaches). Your body should start to develop antibodies, just like it would to when you get a flu injection. The needles don’t hurt, as they just inject it into my arm into the top layer of my skin. And I really like my allergist, he is a great doctor.

I haven’t been sleeping well lately due to being super stressed at work, and now that I have a new boss who is an evil micro manager, I’m having even more difficulties relaxing and trying to sleep at night. He prescribed a sleeping pill to try to help me sleep at night on those nights that I really am having problems falling asleep, because I can become a real bitch when I don’t get in my full amount of sleep. And I like 10 hours of sleep a night, although I can function on 8 hours if I have to. Really, to be honest, I prefer 11 hours of sleep. But that is almost half my day.

Vern seems to be doing fairly well. Talking and eating tons of “mush” that they are serving him at the hospice.

Uncle Vern...
The Montgomery Family
Two weeks ago, Austin’s Uncle Vern was admitted into the hospital due to leukemia. Vern was diagnosed with leukemia about 15 years ago and underwent chemo etc and was cancer free for many many years. Unfortunately, as a result of going through Chemo, he managed to get Parkinson’s disease and has been dealing with the tremors for years now. We got news last weekend that Vern wasn’t doing well, and that his cancer had come back. The doctors said that even when a patient is 100% healthy, there is only a 5% change of recovery from the type of leukemia that he has again. So, since Vern was in such poor health, they sent him to a hospice and said there was nothing else they could do for him. Absolutely awful. I haven’t had to deal with much death in my life, other than my grandparents but I was so far away from them since we lived in Canada and they all lived in Holland, that while it was sad, I did not have to actually cope with seeing death in the face. It’s hard to think about it. The doctors give him about two weeks, they say that his organs will begin to lose function. When he was transferred to the hospice on Wednesday, he did not look to well. But on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday he was in good spirits, talking and doing well.

A bunch of family came out to visit this weekend, to see Vern. Mainly Austin’s cousins from South Carolina and Florida, and his Uncle. It was fun to see them, although we all wish it could have been under different circumstances. We took a family picture with Vern on Saturday and it turned out really well.

What was really quite incredible, was that Cindy (one of Austin’s cousins) has a 4 month old baby named Lauren. Cutest little baby, and really well behaved too. Eats, poops, and giggles. One of the happiest babies I have ever met! Vern face just lit up every time Lauren came into the room, and he was happiest when he was holding her. It was just incredible to see. I’ve known Vern for about 4 years now, and honestly this was the first time I had ever seen him smile. Just too sweet.

Best wishes Vern for a peaceful, painless passing. We will miss you terribly, and NEVER forget you.

Micro Managers suck
We just hired a new senior level manager for my office. I will start reporting to her. Yea, except it's really not becuase she is a micro manager. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. She has been here a day only so far and I'm already pulling my hair out.

This is not good.

A post about nothing really
Shoot, it’s Sunday night already. I haven’t done enough relaxing this weekend and am not quite ready to return to the chaos that is my work lately. We are moving to the suite next door (expanding) and I am coordinating the entire move. It’s proving to be quite stressful on me, especially since I still have to make 50 travel arrangements weekly and manage the office and supervise two people and put out fires when things go wrong and eek.

I need to find out something that will relax me, so I can handle my stress well. I feel like I am not coping very well. Perhaps exercising regularly will help me out. Tomorrow night I should go to the gym and do some cardio. I bought some new running shoes today, so I’m anxious to try them out!

We spent a large portion of this weekend cleaning up the house. We have put everything back together and did a super cleaning session. WE also went through all of the crap in the basement and threw out/donated to the goodwill a bunch of useless stuff. We did this several months ago, but it’s amazing how much stuff we disposed of that we thought 3 months ago was still valid to keep.

It’s 10:15 at night and I’m not the slightest bit tired, which worries me. At night, I am feeling that lately I can’t seem to fall asleep because I’m thinking about the next day and my mind starts racing. Relaxing is not one of my strong points.

Voila! It's finished...finally
Voila! It's finished...finally
Yea! The living room was finally finished today. We cleaned everything up, and took some pictures so we can re-post them onto the MLS and re-create our brochure that is outside. I think it looks drab, but I think potential new home buyers won't be as shocked by the color it was before. It certainly brightened the room up, and the fireplace turned out well. What do you think?

Painting...
Whew. What a whirlwind of a weekend. Austin had to work all night Friday doing an all night release, so I went to dinner and the mall with Julie. We ended up having salad for dinner (pat on the back please for eating somewhat healthy together!) and then going to Old Navy and Sephora. I sure do love Sephora, although I find it easy to get overwhelmed with all of the products they have. After a good hour of roaming around, I ended up getting a new perfume and new mascara. Bad girl mascara to be exact. I’m SO not a bad girl.

Austin got home around 5 am on Saturday morning, and attempted to sleep a bit. I got up around 7 and started taping the living room to paint it a light color from the original picture. We are still doing touch up work on the fireplace, mantle, and hearth. It doesn’t look half bad. Will post pictures when it is done!

Goodbye purple living room
We have decided to paint our living room and remove the purple. A lot of people have said that since it is such a strong color, people might not be as inclined to come visit our house and want to buy it. We also plan to re-arrange items in the living room and move the TV to the corner to "unearth" the fireplace. Doing so will mean we have to build a brand new hearth and mantle. But maybe people will love it and will want to come and see our townhouse and buy it.

Ugh. This weekend isn't going to be fun at all. Austin has to work all night doing a release. Julie and I are going to do some girl things tonight, go to dinner, go to the mall, spend money, that kind of stuff. Should be fun.

Last night I planted some flowers and put them out front of the house. It looks great! Now if only our grass would grow!

The Design Center part deux
We had our second visit to the Design Center today. Since the center is only open from 9 to 5 monday through friday, it means we have to take time off from work. Luckily, she showed up today.

We talked about the things we wanted, our budget, and what we could do with that money. We decided on doing a green/black granite tile counter in the kitchen, to go with our toffee maple 42 inch kitchen cabinets (portrait style). We are doing a tile backsplash in some sort of green tile. We also decided on carpet. We have to go back again and decide on tile for the master bathroom shower, bathtub, and counter top.

We would like time in the kitchen and entry way, but we plan to do that on our own shortly after we move in, so we chose the base linoleum. I'm excited. They dug the lot next to ours, so we are hoping they will start on ours in the next 2 weeks or so. I can't wait. I really can't!

Tomorrow is field work wednesday, which always is a ridiculously busy day for me. I have a dermatologist appointment at 12:45 which is fairly inconvenient but I have a huge acne cyst on my face that developed 2 days ago. If I don't get it injected with cortisone, it will turn into a big icky gross keloid scar like i have elsewhere on my body and I just would prefer that to NOT happen. So I'm going to go and get it injected. Keloid scars are no fun.

Hot Hot Hot
Wow, it's hot outside. Denver broke a record yesterday for heat, and it's smoking hot out today too. Our air conditioning froze up today, so we replaced the air filter and let it thaw out, and now it's back to running normal. It was a hot two hours though, our inside house temperature was above 85 F.

Painting
We talked to our Wonderland Home Rep yesterday, who happens to also be a real estate agent, to try to find out how to generate more interest in our townhouse. He took a look at our pictures and suggested that we paint the interior with a more neutral color. Right now, our living room is a deep dark purple which we love, but he said most people would find it a little too out there. So painting we will do. We also plan to put our townhouse onto the rental market and see if we get any nibbles.

I've been hesitant to start my "new home" scrapbook for fears that we might have to let the new house go if we dont' sell this place by August. Austin said that we can probably float both properties for a few months if we don't sell by November (which is when the new house will be done). So that makes me feel a bit beter about things.

Are strawberries bad for cats?
George eating strawberries
As I take a picture of George licking and rubbing the strawberries I just bought, I wonder...are strawberries bad for cats? A lot of plants are, and for that exact reason I don't have a lot of plants in the house because George would find a way to get to it and start eating it. Jones couldn't care a less, but George will balance on one paw if it will allow him access to some chlorophyll.
